Foreign Minister Westerwelle congratulates new Libyan Prime Minister

13.09.2012 - Press release

Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (13 September) on the election of the new Libyan Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagur:

I congratulate Mustafa Abu Shagur on his election as Libyan Prime Minister. I would also like to thank the defeated candidate Mahmoud Jibril for all his work.
Yesterday’s vote by the newly elected Parliament in Tripoli is yet another milestone for the new Libya on its road towards genuine democracy. However, the assassination of the US ambassador and members of his staff in Benghazi have shown that the country continues to face great challenges. I call upon the new Government to take a firm stance against all forms of terrorism and religious fanaticism.
Germany is ready to help Libya on the road to democracy and the rule of law. Extremism and intolerance may have no place in the new Libya.
