Germany funds relief measures for earthquake victims in Iran

The German Government is providing 150,000 euros from the Federal Foreign Office’s humanitarian aid budget to finance relief measures to help earthquake victims in Iran.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (17 August):

“It is our humanitarian duty to help those suffering hardship in north-west Iran. Following the devastating earthquake last Saturday they also need our solidarity.”

The aid will be targeted in particular at remote villages in the region hit by the earthquake. A team from the NGO humedica is in the area at present to establish the most pressing requirements.

In addition to distributing hygiene items and other urgently needed supplies, medical help is be provided. The deployment of mobile clinics is being considered.

Humedica’s efforts on the ground to date have been financed through donations.
