Today (17 August) Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement on Lakhdar Brahimi’s appointment as new Syria envoy:
“I welcome the appointment of Lakhdar Brahimi as the new Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League for Syria. He is the hoped-for strong successor to Kofi Annan. I hope he can bring to the complicated quest for a political solution the momentum that is so sorely needed.
Germany will do everything in its power to support Mr Brahimi. From the international community and the Security Council in particular I expect solid backing for the new Joint Special Envoy and his difficult mission.”
