Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (7 April) on the agreement reached yesterday between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the leaders of the coup in Mali:
“I hope that Mali will now swiftly restore constitutional order on the basis of the agreement reached by ECOWAS.
The coup leaders must follow their words with deeds and implement the agreement without delay.
The German Government remains deeply concerned about developments in northern Mali. For us, the territorial integrity of Mali is not open to question; Germany will not recognize any unilateral declarations of independence.
I call upon all parties to refrain from using any kind of violence and to resolve within Mali’s constitutional framework any issues which may arise.
Germany emphatically supports ECOWAS’s efforts to bring about a political solution.”
