Foreign Minister Westerwelle to open conference on “Water Diplomacy in Central Asia” at the Federal Foreign Office

06.03.2012 - Press release

At the invitation of Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, high-ranking representatives of the five Central Asian states – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan – will meet for the conference on “Water Diplomacy in Central Asia” at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin on 7 and 8 March.

The conference will take place at Deputy Foreign and Water Minister level. A representative of Afghanistan, as well as high-ranking representatives of the EU, OSCE, UNECE and other donors will also attend.

For the last four years, the Federal Foreign Office has been helping the Central Asian states within the scope of the Berlin Process to establish sustainable regional water management. Among other things, the conference will provide an opportunity to discuss joint projects further. Moreover, a joint declaration on the fair and sustainable use of scarce water resources in Central Asia will be adopted.
