Before leaving for the Middle East, Foreign Minister Westerwelle expressed concern about rising tensions in the region fuelled by the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme. He commented on the situation as follows:
“The escalating dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme poses a growing threat to stability in the Middle East.
This could make the up-hill struggle to revive the Middle East peace process even more difficult.
The authorities in Tehran are called upon to refrain from any actions that could further escalate the situation.
Iran should tone down its inflammatory rhetoric and at last show that it accepts the need for transparency here and is willing to hold substantive talks on its nuclear programme.”
