Foreign Minister Westerwelle on today’s declaration of national liberation by the Libyan National Transitional Council

23.10.2011 - Press release

Commenting on the Libyan declaration of national liberation issued today in Benghazi by the National Transitional Council (NTC), Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle made the following statement today (23 October) in Berlin:

“Today a new era has dawned for Libya. Where once fear and suppression reigned there is now hope for peace and liberty.
Libya faces great challenges. Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule has left the country deeply scarred. Defeating his regime has been a hard struggle. And reconstruction will require tremendous efforts.
It is my sincere hope that the citizens of Libya will realize their aspirations for national reconciliation, reconstruction and democracy. On their chosen path they deserve the full support of the international community. Germany will be a committed partner in this endeavour.”
