Federal Minister Westerwelle has congratulated Algerian writer Boualem Sansal on being awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2011. The statement he issued today (16 October) reads as follows:
“The award pays tribute not only to Boualem Sansal’s literary work but also to his commitment to peaceful and democratic change in Algeria.
I very much admire this author who has never tired of championing the cause of freedom of speech and of public debate, also at great personal sacrifice.
At this time of transition in the Arab world, I hope that Boualem Sansal’s vision of a free and democratic society in Algeria will be realized.”
