Foreign Minister Westerwelle commemorates nuclear strikes against Japan 66 years on

09.08.2011 - Press release

Marking the 66th anniversary of the nuclear bombs which were dropped on Hiroshima (6 August 1945) and Nagasaki (9 August 1945), Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin today (9 August):

“The anniversaries of the nuclear strikes against Japan 66 years ago stand as ever-relevant warnings to us all not to underestimate the dangers of nuclear proliferation. The consequences of nuclear technology falling into the wrong hands are terrible to contemplate.
The German Government is therefore going to pursue its policy of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear material with steadfast commitment. In collaboration with our partners, we will continue to work for a better future, a future without nuclear weapons.”
