Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement on 17 July 2011, the day of the final of the Women’s World Cup:
“The final in Frankfurt will be a wonderful end to an inspiring tournament.
Special thanks and recognition go to the participating teams for the attractive, exciting spectacle they have treated us to, as well as to the organizers and their many hardworking helpers for the excellent preparation of the event and not least to the millions of fans in Germany and throughout the world who have made this Women’s World Cup such a great event.
As in 2006, we were good, welcoming, enthusiastic hosts, and Germany has again shown that it can successfully organize a major international sporting event. The World Cup was a fantastic advertisement for our country.”
