Human Rights Commissioner on the fate of Iranian opposition politicians Mousavi and Karroubi

14.07.2011 - Press release

Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy, today (14 July) made the following statement on the arrest of politicians Mousavi and Karroubi exactly five months ago:

“I would like to pay tribute to Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, the leaders of the Iranian Green Movement, who have been detained for five months now without legal basis at an undisclosed location, cut off from the outside world.
I call on the Iranian Government to respect and protect the right to freedom of expression. The country has repeatedly claimed commitment to that cause, yet has failed to live up to its claims for a long time now.
The two detainees must be released immediately, as must all other political prisoners. I appeal to the Iranian Government to fully meet its obligations under international law.”

The prominent opposition leaders Mousavi and Karroubi were arrested along with their wives on 14 February after having called for protests against the ruling government. They are being detained at an unknown location. According to numerous reports, all four are suffering deteriorating health.
