Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle condemned the latest assaults by the Syrian army in the northern part of the country. He fears a humanitarian crisis. Today (12 June) he had the following to say:
I condemn the actions of the Syrian leadership in the northern part of the country. There is the danger of a humanitarian crisis developing because of the violence and use of heavy weapons.
I call on those responsible in Damascus to stop the violence immediately and make access to the crisis areas possible for humanitarian aid and aid workers.
The dangerous situation makes a clear response by the UN Security Council all the more urgent. We are continuing our political and diplomatic efforts to see that the resolution we put forward is passed as soon possible.
