16.05.2011 - Press release

Foreign Minister Westerwelle congratulated Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil El-Araby on his election to the position of Secretary General of the Arab League. The message included the following:

“I offer my warm congratulations to you on your election as future Secretary General of the League of Arab States. In a time of far-reaching changes in the region, it is good to know that this important position is in experienced and responsible hands.
You have taken on the leadership of Egypt’s foreign policy in a decisive phase and, in the brief time that you have been in office, you have already been able to set accents and record successes. You have supported democratic change in your country with courage and the necessary prudence.
I especially want to thank you for your commitment in the bilateral relationship to Germany.”

Federal Minister Westerwelle had received El-Araby’s predecessor and current Secretary General of the Arab League, Amre Moussa, for talks at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin last Thursday, 12 May. The Arab League is an important actor in the Middle East Peace Process and the upheavals in the Arab world.
