Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has sent the following birthday wishes to Mrs Hildegard Hamm-Brücher, who turns 90 on 11 May 2011:

Please accept my personal and heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of your 90th birthday. I wish you good fortune and the best of health and personal happiness for the year ahead.
The long years you spent as part of the Federal Foreign Office, as Minister of State from 1976 to 1982, remain unforgotten, and I thank you for the great personal commitment with which you worked in the interests of our foreign policy over many years.
I hope that you have the opportunity to celebrate your birthday with joy and contentment among your loved ones.”
After bearing political responsibility for many years, first in Land Hesse and later at national level, Hildegard Hamm-Brücher held the post of Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office from December 1976 until September 1982. She was a Member of the German Bundestag from 1976 until 1990 and stood for the office of Federal President in 1994.
