Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle met with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Amre Moussa, in Berlin today (11 May).

Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle underscored the significance of the historical upheaval in the Arab world and promised Germany’s long-term support for the transformation process in North Africa.

On the subject of Egypt, Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle welcomed the reforms towards democracy and rule of law that have been undertaken so far. Now it was important to see that the elections planned for the fall were free, fair, and representative, he said. Germany will do its part for the success of democratic change. In this context, Foreign Minister Westerwelle again expressed his great concern over the situation of the Copts in the country.

Both agreed that the current stand-still in the Middle East Peace Process must be overcome quickly. Foreign Minister Westerwelle emphasized that the German Government thought a two-state solution had to be reached through negotiations.
