With protests continuing in large areas of Syria and the Syrian security forces making massive use of violence, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today:
“The renewed violence being used against peaceful protesters in Syria is unacceptable. The German Government condemns it in the strongest possible terms. What happened yesterday needs to be investigated in detail and dealt with before the law.
The time has come for the Syrian Government to reach out a hand to the democracy movement and finally heed the urgent calls of the international community.
The use of violence against peaceful protesters must be stopped immediately, and the civil right freely to assemble and to express opinions must be guaranteed.”
