“I am very concerned about the sentence given to Egyptian blogger Maikel Nabil on 10 April 2011. Punishing critical comments about the military with a three-year prison sentence contradicts Egypt’s intention to become a country with freedom of speech and rule of law. I therefore call for the verdict to be reviewed immediately and Maikel Nabil’s sentence to be suspended until then.
On behalf of the German Government, I appeal to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and the transitional government to remain resolutely on the path to democracy and human rights. Germany will continue to actively support and attentively accompany the Egyptian people on this path.”
