Human Rights Commissioner Löning welcomes the abolition of the death penalty in Illinois, USA
Markus Löning, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, issued the following statement in Tunis today (11 March) in response to the news that the death penalty had been abolished in the State of Illinois, USA:
“I expressly welcome Governor Quinn’s decision. With this move, Illinois has become part of a global trend which has the German Government’s full support. I also see this decision as a clear signal to other US states. Given how many cases involving death sentences are not clear-cut, other states should follow this example and abolish capital punishment or at least suspend its application.”
