Foreign Minister Westerwelle on arrests of foreign journalists in China

06.03.2011 - Press release

In connection with further arrests of foreign journalists in China, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle today (6 March 2011) issued the following statement:

“Reports on further arrests of foreign journalists, including German correspondents, by Chinese security officers are most disturbing.
We have already on several occasions called on the Chinese Government to guarantee freedom of the media for German and other foreign journalists. I appeal again to the Chinese Government to ensure this freedom is respected.
The continuing attempts to hinder journalists from doing their work are unacceptable and prejudicial to the standing of the People’s Republic of China in the wider world.”
