Human Rights Commissioner Löning on the latest wave of executions in Taiwan

04.03.2011 - Press release

Commenting on the five most recent executions in Taiwan, Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, today (4 March) issued the following statement in Berlin:

“I strongly condemn the executions. I have always considered Taiwan a positive role model for democracy and the rule of law. This makes it all the worse that Taiwan is now sending such a negative signal. It is against this background that the head of the Taipei Representative Office in Berlin has been summoned to the Federal Foreign Office today.”

The German Government has been campaigning to bring about the worldwide abolition of the death penalty.
