Minister of State Werner Hoyer had a meeting today with the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Bebić, who is on an official visit to Germany at the invitation of the President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert.
The talks, which took place in a very amicable atmosphere at the Federal Foreign Office, focused on Croatia’s road towards the European Union.
There was agreement that the country had reached the home stretch of its accession negotiations with the EU, but was nonetheless expected to effect further reforms in that final furlong.
Minister of State Hoyer said:
“Our Croatian friends have already achieved impressive accomplishments on their road towards the EU. I am confident that they will continue this success story. Germany will continue to support Croatia on this road. We look forward to welcoming Croatia into the EU as soon as possible.”
The talks also covered the role of the Croatian Parliament and Croatian political parties in the process of accession to the EU as well as Croatia’s regional policy, particularly with respect to its relations with its neighbours Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
