In the context of the major changes underway in Egypt, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle spoke on the phone with Egyptian caretaker Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq today (15 February).
Prime Minister Shafiq described the political, economic and social situation prevalent in Egypt following the resignation of Hosni Mubarak.
Federal Minister Westerwelle emphasized how willing Germany and the European Union were to assist Egypt in its transition to irreversible democracy. He said that Egypt had been offered a transformation partnership to strengthen civil society and democratic institutions and create new economic vigour. Egypt’s economic success will be a crucial factor in democratic stability.
