Federal Foreign Office provides emergency humanitarian aid for Egypt
In response to current developments in Egypt, the Federal Foreign Office is giving the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) 500,000 euro for emergency aid. The funds are intended to support existing programmes being run for the benefit of those parts of the population which are particularly affected by the situation.
The numbers of casualties are continuing to rise as a result of the violent clashes which have been taking place in Cairo and other Egyptian cities. The ICRC is assisting the local emergency services in taking care of the injured. It provides medicines and other medical supplies, for example, to health centres and hospitals.
As part of its mandate under international law, the ICRC also campaigns for the maintenance of international humanitarian standards and the protection of prisoners and their rights. To this end, it is in constant contact with national authorities, the military and civil society.
