Human Rights Commissioner Löning speaks about conditions in Egypt

28.01.2011 - Press release

Speaking today (28 January) about the latest developments in Egypt, Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, issued the following statement:

“I am greatly concerned by developments in Egypt. The action taken by the Egyptian police is a slap in the face for all those who stand up for human and civil rights in Egypt. I call on the Egyptian Government to ensure that no more violence is used against demonstrators.
The people in Egypt are exercising their right to freedom of assembly. We expect the Egyptian Government to take the interests of the Egyptian people as the focus for its actions.
Freedom of the press and of opinion must be absolutely guaranteed. The blocking of websites is unacceptable. I call on the Egyptian Government to reenable access immediately to the websites which have been blocked, release all imprisoned demonstrators directly and enter into political dialogue.”
