Federal Minister Westerwelle condemns suicide attack in Iraq

More than 50 people are reported to have been killed today in a suicide attack on an Iraqi police recruiting office in Tikrit which also left over a hundred injured. Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (18 January):

“I am stunned by this horrific act and condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Our sympathy goes out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives; we wish the injured a rapid recovery.
Having successfully formed a government, Iraq is on the road towards democratic and social stability. The terrorist forces cannot be allowed to endanger this process.
Germany will continue to stand by Iraq as a dependable partner to advance the reconstruction of the country and render the process of reconciliation within Iraqi society irreversible.”
