Commenting on the formation of a government of national unity in Tunisia which includes members of the opposition, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (17 January):
“Tunisia needs a sustainable and durable reform course and it can only succeed if all sections of society are involved. Today’s formation of a government of national unity is a first key step towards this.
I also welcome the announced release of all political prisoners. Tunisian politics thus now has a real opportunity to make a fresh start.
Together with the European Union, we are ready and willing to help ensure that Tunisia embarks upon an irreversible path towards democracy. In the short term, this applies in particular to the preparations for the presidential and parliamentary elections due to be held in a few weeks’ time.”
