Federal Minister Westerwelle concerned about government crisis in Lebanon
Several March 8 ministers have announced their resignation from the national unity government led by Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Their decision was prompted by a dispute over the Lebanese Government’s attitude to the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
In this connection Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle today (12 January) issued the following statement in Berlin:
“I am concerned at the news of the resignation of several ministers from Prime Minister Hariri’s Government.
Lebanon’s stability is crucial for the entire region. All political forces in Lebanon are called upon to act responsibly and constructively in this situation, not least with regard to the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Clarification of the circumstances surrounding the attack on Rafik Hariri is not only in the interest of the international community; it is also in the interest of the people of Lebanon. That is why Germany has always actively supported the work of the Tribunal.”
