Federal Minister Westerwelle condemns violence in Iraq

More than 60 people were reported killed and hundreds injured in multiple bombings today in Baghdad. Today’s attacks followed the deaths on Sunday of dozens of people, many among them Christians, who were taken hostage in a Catholic church in the Iraqi capital. Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (2 November):

“I am shocked and disturbed at this latest wave of violence in Iraq, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Our heartfelt sympathy is with the families and loved ones of the victims, and I wish a speedy recovery to those injured.Civilians of many different faiths are losing their lives in Iraq because terrorists want to stop the country’s progress on the difficult path towards reconciliation and stability. They must not succeed in this.For the sake of the citizens of Iraq, I once again call on the country’s political forces to reach agreement quickly in forming a government which is capable of acting and which includes all groups of the population. This is the only way to effectively introduce the necessary process of reform in Iraq, and the only way to uproot terrorism.”
