After having been captured by pirates on 24 October 2010, the German cargo ship Beluga Fortune and its crew have now been freed.

Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (25 October) in Berlin:

“I am relieved that the German ship Beluga Fortune and its crew are free. For solving the case so swiftly, we would above all like to thank the valiant and courageous effort of British naval forces. I offer my most sincere thanks to them, to our crisis unit, and to all authorities which took part in the rescue. This rapid rescue offers a prime example of international cooperation in combating piracy.”
