Minister of State Hoyer meets former Lebanese Prime Minister Siniora

A day before the Bundestag decides whether to continue Bundeswehr participation in the UNIFIL mission off the coast of Lebanon, Minister of State Werner Hoyer met former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. Siniora expressed his gratitude for Germany’s commitment to date, both at bilateral level and within the scope of UNIFIL, and said the Lebanese Government hoped that Germany would continue its participation in the mission.

Minister of State Werner Hoyer today (16 June) had a meeting in Berlin with Fouad Siniora, former Lebanese Prime Minister and current parliamentary leader of Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s “Future Movement”.

With the Bundestag due to reach a decision on its continuation tomorrow (17 June), the talks focused on Germany’s participation in the international UNIFIL fleet off the Lebanese coast. The two men also discussed the situation in Lebanon, the Middle East peace process and other regional issues.

Fouad Siniora thanked Mr Hoyer for Germany’s commitment to date, both at bilateral level and within the framework of UNIFIL, and said the Lebanese Government hoped that Germany would continue its participation in the mission. Minister of State Hoyer emphasized the Federal Government’s willingness to continue to support Lebanon in its endeavours to strengthen its stability and sovereignty.
