Federal Minister Westerwelle welcomes UN Security Council Resolution on Iran

09.06.2010 - Press release

Commenting onthe United Nations Security Council resolution imposing sanctions against Iran, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (June 9) in Berlin:

The UN Security Council resolution on the Iranian nuclear program is a clear and balanced response to Iran’s continuing refusal to dispel doubts about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program. The resolution sends a clear signal from the international community that a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable.

Iran has for years flouted the conditions of the Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is not being transparent about its nuclear program. The new sanctions clearly drive home to the Iranian leadership that this stance, which is contrary to international law, has its price.

Our goal remains a diplomatic solution. The door to cooperation and transparency is still open. It is up to Iran to finally meet its international obligations and cooperate with the international community.“
