Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has assured the United Arab Emirates that Germany will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of Mahmoud al Mabhouh. He stated that as a German passport had been used in the killing, it was very much in Germany’s interest that the case be thoroughly investigated. The Minister went on to say that the German Government had also requested its Israeli partners to help solve this case.

At the instigation of Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, the Deputy Director-General at the Federal Foreign Office responsible for the Middle East, Ambassador Andreas Michaelis, today (18 February) had a meeting with the Minister of the Israeli Embassy in Berlin.

During the talks, the Deputy Director-General asked the Israeli side to examine whether it had any information which might help clarify the circumstances surrounding the death in Dubai of Mahmoud al Mabhouh, and to pass on any such information.

The Federal Foreign Minister issued the following statement today in Berlin:

“In the light of the information which has emerged so far, I believe a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death of Mahmoud al Mabhouh to be a matter of urgency. Germany will do everything necessary to help clarify the matter.”
