The new European Commission took up office today. Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle sent a letter congratulating Günter Oettinger on his appointment as Commissioner for Energy. The letter read as follows:

“Please accept my sincere congratulations on your appointment as a member of the Commission of the European Union. With you, Germany has a worthy representative in the Commission.

During the coming years, Europe will face major challenges. The new Commission will have to play a major role in mastering them. Now that the Lisbon Treaty has entered into force, our task is to work together to map out a course of action for the next few years.

Your portfolio – energy – is an especially responsible task. More than almost any other issue, energy is a focus of public attention as the development of the energy sector – and energy security – have a crucial impact on competitiveness and growth.

I wish you a sure hand and every success in carrying out your important responsibilities. I am firmly convinced that together we will rise to the challenges ahead, and you may rest assured that Germany will be a reliable partner in this endeavour.”
