Federal Minister Westerwelle spoke on the telephone to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

As part of coordination efforts in the run-up to the Afghanistan Conference in London, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle talked to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today (26 January) about the Federal Government’s strategy on Germany’s engagement in Afghanistan.

The Federal Minister outlined Germany’s plans to extend its engagement in the spheres of civilian reconstruction, training of police and army and reintegration of moderate Taliban in the light of the London Conference. He sees London as an opportunity for a new start for the international engagement in Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Clinton thanked the Minister for briefing her and paid tribute to Germany’s commitment to changing the approach of the international Afghanistan strategy.
