Westerwelle meets former Afghan Foreign Minister Spanta

22.01.2010 - Press release

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Rangin Spanta, the head of the Afghan delegation to next week’s London Conference on Afghanistan, agree that the Conference should aim to establish concrete targets for economic and social development, security and good governance.

To prepare for the London Conference on Afghanistan, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle today (22 January) met Rangin Dadfar Spanta, the head of the Afghan delegation to the Conference and the country’s former Foreign Minister.

As a reliable partner, Germany would continue to make its contribution to reconstruction and security in Afghanistan, Federal Minister Westerwelle pointed out.

Both men agreed that the ongoing preparations for the London Conference were proceeding satisfactorily. The aim, they noted, should be to establish concrete targets for economic and social development, security and good governance.

Rangin Spanta emphasized the importance of Germany’s contribution and praised the networked security concept that Germany had played a major part in developing. He made clear his country wanted as soon as possible to assume ever greater responsibility for security and national development.
