Emergency aid for flood victims in Burkina Faso

07.09.2009 - Press release

After days of heavy rainfall in western parts of Central Africa, large sections of Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, are submerged. The bursting of several dams added to the damage already caused by the storms. Many people were forced to flee. In the capital alone over 20,000 houses were destroyed, leaving 150,000 people homeless.

The Federal Foreign Office is making up to 100,000 euro available to the aid organization HELP, which is already active in the country, for immediate emergency assistance measures. These funds will be used to finance aid supplies like blankets, water canisters and food for those affected by the disaster.

Flooding and heavy rainfall has also affected the neighbouring countries of Mali, Niger and Guinea. The Federal Foreign Office is following developments there closely and is prepared to make further resources available if they are urgently needed.
