Federal Foreign Office provides humanitarian assistance for internally displaced persons in Yemen

03.09.2009 - Press release

The Federal Foreign Office is making available EUR 500,000 for humanitarian assistance and protection measures to bring supplies to internally displaced persons in Yemen.

Following the most recent violent confrontations in the Sa’ada region in the north of the country, the humanitarian situation there has deteriorated dramatically. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes in a bid to escape the violence.

In cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Federal Foreign Office is working to improve water supplies and health care for the internally displaced persons.

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world. Internal conflicts flare up repeatedly in this country on the Gulf of Aden. The conflict in the Sa’ada region which has been going on for years has turned around 150,000 people into internally displaced persons.
