Steinmeier accepts a petition in connection with the upcoming Copenhagen climate summit
Tomorrow, Thursday, the non-governmental organization AVAAZ.org will present Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier with a petition on the climate summit due to take place in December in Copenhagen.
AVAAZ.org’s current “tck tck tck campaign” aims to canvass for an ambitious, just and binding climate protection agreement in the run-up to the Copenhagen summit. The organization has collected some 150,000 signatures in support of this goal. AVAAZ.org defines itself as a global internet movement that organizes political campaigns in the fields of climate change and human rights. It was founded in 2007 and now boasts more than three million members.
The Federal Government and the Federal Foreign Office have consistently promoted an ambitious climate policy at both the European and international level. Initiatives such as the Transatlantic Climate Bridge or the establishment of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) are active contributions towards improving global cooperation on climate protection. The Copenhagen conference scheduled to take place in December is to adopt a follow-up agreement to the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.
