Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today (4 August) sent the following letter congratulating Massoud Barzani, President of Kurdistan-Iraq region, on his re-election:

“Please accept my sincere congratulations on your re-election as President of Kurdistan-Iraq region. The democratic progress made and the ongoing stability in your region allow people there to look to the future with hope.

Your recent meeting with Prime Minister Al-Maliki is a sign that these positive developments have also been noticed in Baghdad. The reconciliation of interests between Kurds and Arabs will enable Iraq to prosper.
