Steinmeier congratulates new European Parliament President

14.07.2009 - Press release

The European Parliament today (14 July) elected Jerzy Buzek as its new President. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sent Jerzy Buzek a letter congratulating him on his new post. The letter read as follows:

“Please accept my sincere congratulations on your resounding election as President of the European Parliament.

I am delighted that for the first time a politician from one of the European Union's new member states is taking over as President of the European Parliament. Your election to the post is also a reflection of the fact that your country, Poland, has taken its permanent place in Europe, something which we Germans also find very gratifying.

I am especially happy that the European Parliament is now to be headed by a committed European and universally respected politician. Your talent for fostering integration will undoubtedly be of particular use in tackling the major challenges Europe will face in the coming years.

I wish you all the best, plenty of stamina and every possible success in carrying out your new responsibilities.”
