New website featuring general and business information about Iraq goes online

07.05.2009 - Press release

As another step towards assisting reconstruction in Iraq, the independent website “Wirtschaftsplattform Irak” (Business Platform Iraq) financed by the Federal Foreign Office is going online today (7 May) at www.wp-irak.de. The project is being organized by the Berlin-based non-profit-making society “Media in Cooperation and Transition” (MICT).

The website provides information about economic and social developments in Iraq as well as up-to-date information about opportunities and important dates for German companies. It also includes information in Arabic. MICT already runs another website giving independent political information about Iraq which is also financed by the Federal Foreign Office (www.niqash.org).

Launching the new project today (7 May), Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier said:

“The new website is a further concrete step in our efforts to assist economic reconstruction in Iraq. It is especially important to be able to access reliable, detailed and objective information about economic developments and society in Iraq.

The project thus fits seamlessly into our many efforts to help bring stability to Iraq through appropriate cooperation activities.”

Since 2003 the Federal Government has made available to Iraq a total of EUR 300 million in aid and has cancelled debts amounting to EUR 4.69 billion. This money is being used to fund numerous projects in the fields of institution-building, further training and human rights. German companies are already active in Iraq in the health, energy, transport and infrastructure sectors.
