Welcome
State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action Jennifer Morgan prior to her departure for Canada
State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action Jennifer Morgan issued the following statement today (17 September 2024) prior to her departure for Canada:
Canada is a close and reliable partner for Germany in climate foreign policy. We are committed in the United Nations and the G7 to engaging together in ambitious international climate action. At the same time, we are seizing the opportunities presented by the energy transition to safeguard the competitiveness of our economy. The German-Canadian energy and hydrogen partnership is an example of this. This is why I am travelling to Calgary and Toronto in order to discuss the opportunities for the energy transition and climate cooperation with partners in the region. In addition to this, I would like to hear from German and Canadian industry about the opportunities and challenges that they believe are posed by the transition to climate-neutral business practices.
I am visiting Canada prior to the UN General Assembly and the Climate Change Conference. At this year’s COP, we can – with political will and thorough work – accelerate the energy transition, strengthen resilience and mobilise sufficient funds for climate action. I would like to lay the groundwork for this in discussions among friends.
Background information:
State Secretary Morgan is travelling to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Ontario, where she will gain a first-hand impression of the energy transition in the region. In Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa, she will talk to national and regional government representatives, with business representatives within the framework of the Transatlantic Clean Economy Bridge, as well as with scientists, representatives from indigenous communities and other civil-society stakeholders. She will also visit a magnesium oxide plant in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Thereafter, Minister of State Morgan will travel onwards to the United States to attend the Climate Week NYC 2024 in New York and the UN General Assembly.
