Federal Foreign Office on the end of UNITAD’s work in Iraq

17.09.2024 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (17 September 2024) on the end of UNITAD’s work in Iraq:

The UN mission UNITAD in Iraq is coming to an end – Germany’s commitment to the criminal prosecution of IS crimes continues

The UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD) is ending its work in Iraq today.

In cooperation with the Iraqi authorities, UNITAD has collected and digitalised important evidence of crimes committed by the so‑called Islamic State over a number of years. In particular, crimes against minorities such as the Yazidi community in Iraq have been documented. Thanks to the work of the UNITAD team, 68 mass graves have been identified and exhumed.

UNITAD has made its findings available to national courts around the world for rule‑of‑law procedures. In a number of German investigations conducted by the Federal Public Prosecutor General’s Office, for example, cooperation with UNITAD was crucial for bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Last but not least, UNITAD has strengthened the Iraqi judiciary with its technical support.

Prosecuting IS crimes will continue to be vital for ensuring social harmony in Iraq in the future. This ensures justice for the victims and sends a clear message rejecting impunity. Even after the end of the UN mission, Germany will remain committed to safeguarding UNITAD’s work, continuing the dialogue with the Iraqi Government and pressing ahead with the prosecution of IS crimes.

Background information

UNITAD was established in 2017 with Security Council Resolution 2379 and has since made an important contribution to investigating the crimes of the terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) in Iraq. Germany has supported UNITAD’s work with around five million euro in this period. Federal public prosecutor Christian Ritscher directed UNITAD from October 2021 to March 2024.
