Federal Foreign Office on the postponement of the presidential election in Senegal

05.02.2024 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement today (5 February) on the postponement of the presidential election in Senegal.

We are following developments in Senegal very closely and with concern.

The Senegalese have a right to continue the election process and to determine their political leadership democratically. The Government has a responsibility to make possible transparent and inclusive elections with due regard to the standards that underpin the rule of law. We are in agreement with ECOWAS and the AU on this.

Senegal’s democratic tradition, which has grown over a long period, has always served as a model in a region wracked by crises and instability. We call on all political forces to uphold this tradition, especially in these challenging times.
