Winter package for Ukraine – joint press statement by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Federal Foreign Office
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Federal Foreign Office are contributing 88.5 million euro to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine
The Federal Government is setting aside a further 88.5 million euro for the European Energy Community. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is contributing 54.3 million euro via KfW while the Federal Foreign Office is providing 34.2 million euro. After all, Russia’s airstrikes are targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure also in the second winter of Russia’s war of aggression against the country.
Among other things, Ukraine is using the Energy Support Fund to finance energy sources, spare parts and equipment such as transformers and generators, which are helping to maintain Ukraine’s energy supply. Ukrainian energy companies can use these funds to repair destroyed substations and power plants in order to continue supplying people with electricity and heat. Another part of the funds will be used for green energy transition projects, such as photovoltaic systems on public buildings and the green reconstruction of Ukraine.
At the end of last year, the Federal Government had already contributed 129.5 million euro to the Energy Support Fund. This brings Germany’s overall contribution to 218 million euro. Germany remains by far the largest donor to the fund, which has collected around 400 million euro since February 2022. The European Energy Community organises the tenders for the goods to be procured and monitors the use of the funds.
The contributions to the Energy Support Fund are part of the Federal Government’s winter package of over 1.6 billion euro for Ukraine this year, which also includes military contributions to air defence, development policy support and humanitarian assistance.
