Human Rights Commissioner Luise Amtsberg on humanitarian assistance in the Palestinian territories

08.10.2023 - Press release

We condemn the heinous, inhuman attacks on Israel by Hamas in which hundreds of peaceful civilians and innocent people have lost their lives. This senseless terrorist violence and the abduction of numerous civilians are shocking and must cease immediately. The Federal Government stands in solidarity at Israel’s side.

With regard to German humanitarian assistance in the Palestinian Territories:

We provide assistance to people in need in line with humanitarian principles – in the Palestinian Territories, just as we do in Syria or Yemen. In this context, we constantly verify, that our help really does get to the people who need it. This also applies in the current situation. We provide no direct budget support to the Palestinian Authority.

According to UN estimates, some 2.1 million people in the Palestinian territories are dependent on humanitarian assistance in 2023.

In 2023, the Federal Foreign Office has made available humanitarian assistance of approx. 72 million euro the Palestinian Territories, via international organisations and the UN. These funds are used primarily to ensure that people in need in the Palestinian territories have access to food and healthcare.
