Statement by Human Rights Commissioner Luise Amtsberg on the anti-LGBTQIA+ law in Uganda

30.05.2023 - Press release

The anti-LGBTQIA+ law has been passed in Uganda despite the international community’s campaign for it not to be signed. The law represents a massive violation of the fundamental human rights of queer people. Every individual has the right to live in safety and to freely develop their personality and thus to live how they want and love whom they want. It is right that Germany is now expanding its solidarity and support for the LGBTQIA+ community in the country, to protect them and their work. One important possible starting point to offer the best possible protection to activists who are in acute danger is to expand protection programmes to cover these people. In addition, our funding must be reviewed to ensure that it does not bolster any anti-LGBTQIA+ forces in Uganda. International protection for the LGBTQIA+ community in Uganda is today more crucial than ever.
