The latest developments in Gaza and Israel are a cause of great concern. We strongly condemn the rocket fire on Israeli cities and towns; it has to stop immediately. Israel, like any other state, has a right to self-defence. Civilians must never be the target of attacks.

Any further escalation has to be prevented now and the greatest possible restraint has to be exercised. The principle of proportionality as set forth by international law must be adhered to. We join the families of the civilian victims in their mourning for the losses and our thoughts are with all those who fear for the lives and health of their loved ones.
