A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (22 September) on the attempted coup in the Sudan:
We condemn yesterday’s attempted coup in the Sudan. Undemocratic actions of this kind jeopardise the political transition in the Sudan, which is an important step towards lasting peace and prosperity for the country’s people.
We welcome the Government’s clear commitment to continuing the process of transition and reform. Economic reforms, progress in the peace process, and the establishment of institutions which uphold democracy and the rule of law, as set out in the transitional constitution, must be vigorously pursued in order to improve conditions for the people of the Sudan.
Germany has been a keen supporter of a democratic and peaceful future for the Sudan over the past years and will continue to support the political transition under the civilian-led interim government.
