Statement by Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the sentencing of Michael Spavor and Robert Schellenberg

11.08.2021 - Press release

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement today (11 August) on the sentencing of the two Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Robert Schellenberg by Chinese courts:

The convictions of two Canadian citizens are another severe blow to the Chinese leadership’s stated goal of strengthening the rule of law. The trial against Michael Spavor was held behind closed doors and his consular rights were restricted in breach of international law. Robert Schellenberg, who has been sentenced to death, also deserved a fair trial free of political instrumentalisation. We stand in solidarity with Canada. For almost three years, China has been arbitrarily holding another Canadian citizen, Michael Kovrig, detained. I call on the Chinese government to release Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig immediately.
